Water under a fridge is almost always one of four things: a clogged defrost drain tube (the most common cause by far — food debris and ice slush clog the drain hole under the evaporator coils and water backs up out of the drain pan), a cracked or shifted drain pan under the evaporator, a loose or leaking water supply line feeding the ice maker / water dispenser at the back of the fridge, or an overactive auto-defrost cycle that fills the pan faster than it can evaporate. Unplug the fridge before pulling the back panel — most leaks are diagnosable in a few minutes once you can see the back.
A refrigerator leaking water is one of the most common appliance service calls — and one of the most fixable. Unlike a fridge that’s warm (which often points to a sealed-system or compressor issue), a leaking fridge almost always has a diagnosable, low-cost cause: a clogged drain tube, a cracked pan, a loose fitting, or a bad gasket. This guide walks through the six common causes in order, from the cheap free fix to the more involved part replacement, then gives you a 7-step diagnostic sequence to walk through on the call.
Why Your Refrigerator Is Leaking Water — The 6 Most Common Causes
Clogged defrost drain tube
The defrost drain is the small hole at the back of the freezer floor that carries meltwater from the evaporator coils down into the drain pan under the fridge. Food debris, ice slush, and paper labels collect in the drain and the small drain tube below it — over months, they form a plug that backs water up out of the drain pan and onto the floor. This is the single most common cause of a leaking refrigerator (~70% of calls) and the cheapest to fix: warm water, a turkey baster, and a flexible drain brush clear the majority in under 30 minutes with no parts.
Cracked or shifted drain pan
The drain pan is a thin plastic tray that slides under the evaporator and catches the small amount of defrost water. It’s designed to let the water evaporate from compressor heat over a day or two. Hairline cracks develop near the corners of the pan from age, from being overtightened with mounting screws, or from being forced back into position with the back panel pressing on it. A cracked pan drips steadily instead of holding water for evaporation. Pan replacement runs $15–45 depending on brand; most Whirlpool, GE, Samsung, and LG pans are interchangeable form-factor and available from any appliance parts supplier.
Loose or leaking water supply line
Most modern refrigerators have a 1/4-inch copper or plastic supply line running from a saddle valve or pierce valve on the household cold-water supply to the water inlet valve on the back of the fridge — it serves the ice maker and water dispenser. Compression fittings at either end of that line can loosen over years of vibration, and the ferrule (the small brass ring that seals the joint) can crack. The leak is usually visible as a slow drip under and behind the fridge, often with white mineral deposits at the joint. Tighten the compression nut (hand-tight plus a quarter turn) or replace the ferrule ($5–10) for a permanent fix.
Auto-defrost running too often / stuck defrost timer
A refrigerator automatically cycles through defrost every 6–12 hours, melting frost off the evaporator coils and sending the meltwater to the drain pan. If the defrost timer or control board is stuck in the defrost state, the heater runs more often than needed, the drain pan fills faster than evaporation can keep up, and water overflows. Less common than a clogged drain, but if you’ve cleared the drain and the leak returns within a day or two, the defrost timer or board is the suspect. Defrost timers run $40–150; replacement is a 30–60 minute job.
Door seal failure causing excess condensation
Warm, humid kitchen air enters through a worn or torn door gasket, condenses on the cold interior surfaces, and accumulates as water droplets inside the fresh-food or freezer compartment. In humid climates or during summer, this can overflow the drain pan or pool on the floor under the crisper drawers. Test the seal by closing the door on a piece of paper — it should resist a pull. If it slides out easily, the gasket is failing and needs replacement ($50–200 depending on brand). A loose door hinge or a fridge that isn’t level can also cause a partial seal failure.
Drain pan overfill from high-humidity environment
Rare but legitimate: a refrigerator installed in a basement, garage, or unconditioned space with high ambient humidity can’t evaporate defrost water fast enough — the drain pan fills faster than the compressor heat underneath can dry it, and water overflows onto the floor. The fix is environmental rather than part-replacement: improve air circulation around the back of the fridge, run a dehumidifier nearby, or move the fridge to a less humid location. This is a diagnosis of exclusion — rule out the five causes above first.
The Diagnostic Checklist — Work Through These in Order
Safety first: Unplug the refrigerator before opening any panels or testing components. If you smell burning, see smoke, or the compressor case is hot enough to burn on touch — stop and call a professional. The compressor compartment can retain hazardous voltage and heat even when the unit is unplugged. Wait five minutes after unplugging before opening the back panel to allow capacitors to discharge.
Confirm the Symptom — Where Is the Water, and How Often?
Before pulling anything apart, pin down exactly where the water is and how often it appears. This decides which cause to investigate first:
- Under the fridge only: Almost always the defrost drain, drain pan, or supply line. Most common. Proceed to Step 2.
- Inside the fresh-food compartment only: Door gasket failure, frozen-item thaw, or a clogged drip tray under the crispers. Proceed to Step 7.
- Under the freezer specifically: Cracked drain pan or loose drain tube connection. Proceed to Step 5.
- Pooling directly under the ice maker / dispenser: Supply line leak at the inlet valve. Proceed to Step 6.
- Water appears once every defrost cycle (every 6–12 hours): Defrost-cycle related — drain tube or pan is the most likely cause. Proceed to Steps 3–5.
- Constant drip that doesn’t stop: Supply line fitting. Proceed to Step 6 first, then drain work.
Pull the Fridge Out and Inspect the Rear Hardware
The vast majority of refrigerator leaks are diagnosable from the back of the fridge. Pull it out carefully and look at the rear panel, drain pan, and visible supply line.
- Unplug first. Pulling the fridge out does not require unplugging, but anything beyond pulling requires it — do it before you touch any water-carrying hardware.
- Pull straight out, slowly. Watch for the supply line at the back. A copper or plastic 1/4-inch line is usually flexible enough to allow 2–3 feet of travel; pull past that and you kink the line and crack a fitting.
- Remove the back lower panel. It’s usually a thin metal cover held by 4–6 screws along the bottom edge. Pulling it off exposes the compressor, condenser coils, drain pan, and (on most fridges) the water inlet valve.
- Look for active drips. A drip directly below the water inlet valve = supply line leak. A drip lower on the floor from the drain pan = pan crack or shifted pan. A general wet area on the floor = back of the drain pan is the most likely culprit.
- Inspect the drain pan. Most pans slide rearward out of two channels. Pull it and check for water level, cracks, distortion, and mineral buildup. Replace if cracked ($15–45).
Pour Warm Water Down the Defrost Drain to Confirm the Clog
The defrost drain test is fast and definitive — it tells you within a minute whether the drain tube is the source.
- Locate the drain. Inside the freezer, look for a small hole at the back of the compartment floor (or behind the evaporator cover panel). The hole is usually under a small plastic plug or grate.
- Mix the flush solution. 1–2 cups of warm tap water with a spoonful of baking soda (or a drop of dish soap). The baking soda neutralizes mild odors and the soap breaks surface tension to help break up a grease plug.
- Pour slowly with a turkey baster. Squeeze the baster gently to push the solution down the drain hole. A clear drain takes the water immediately with a small gurgle. A slow drain or a backup that doesn’t fall to the pan below confirms a clog somewhere along the tube.
- Check the drain pan. While the flush is going, watch the drain pan from the back of the fridge. If the water arrives in the pan, the drain is clear. If it spills over the freezer floor before reaching the pan, the clog is at the top.
- If the flush confirms a clog: Move to Step 4. If the flush drains cleanly, the leak source is elsewhere (drain pan, supply line, or door seal) — jump to those steps.
Mechanically Clear the Defrost Drain Tube
If the warm-water test confirms a clog, mechanically clear the tube. This is the actual fix for the most common refrigerator leak.
- Use a flexible drain-cleaning brush. A 1/4-inch flexible plastic drain brush ($5–8 at any hardware store, in the plumbing aisle) is the right tool for the 1/2-inch defrost drain tube. Push it down the drain hole and rotate gently while advancing.
- Or use a wet/dry vacuum. If you have a shop vac, briefly seal the hose end to the drain hole (use a wet rag to seal around it) and run the vacuum for 10–15 seconds. The vacuum pulls debris backwards out of the tube. This is faster than the brush on severe clogs.
- Flush again. After clearing, repeat the warm-water / baking soda flush from Step 3. The drain should now take water freely. Run 2–3 flushes — the first carries pieces of the clog, the second confirms clear flow.
- Reassemble the cover. Replace the evaporator cover panel if you removed one, and confirm the drain grate is in place.
- Monitor over the next defrost cycle. After clearing, the leak should stop after the next auto-defrost cycle (within 6–12 hours). If water reappears the next day, the drain has a more serious obstruction or the pan is cracked — move to Step 5.
Inspect and Replace the Drain Pan
If Steps 3 and 4 don’t resolve the leak, or if you can see water dripping from the drain pan itself, the pan is cracked or shifted. This is the second most common cause.
- Pull the pan out. From the back of the fridge (with the lower panel removed), the drain pan usually slides rearward out of two plastic channels. On some bottom-mount freezer models, you have to remove a small plastic shield or a screw at the bottom of the evaporator.
- Inspect for cracks. Hairline cracks are common near the corners. Hold the pan up to a light: any crack will show through. White mineral deposits along the crack indicate an active, ongoing leak.
- Check for displaced position. A pan that isn’t fully seated in its channels will let water drip past the edge. Re-seat it fully; if it doesn’t stay seated (broken clips), replace it.
- Replace if cracked. Order by the model number on the inside of the old pan or on the fridge’s data plate (inside the fresh-food compartment, on the side wall). Replacement pans run $15–45.
- Reassemble. Slide the new pan back into the channels, replace the lower back panel, plug the fridge back in, and confirm the leak has stopped. Replace the rear kick panel.
Check the Water Supply Line and Inlet Valve
Visible drips directly below the water inlet valve (the small plastic component on the back of the fridge where the supply line attaches) point to a fitting leak or a failed inlet valve.
- Feel the supply line and fitting. With the fridge plugged in, run your hand along the 1/4-inch line from the wall saddle valve back to the inlet valve. Cold and dry line + dry fitting = no leak. Damp or wet joint with white calcium deposits = active leak at that joint.
- Tighten the compression nut. If the leak is at the saddle valve or the inlet valve fitting, tighten the compression nut by hand plus a quarter turn with a 3/8-inch or 7/16-inch wrench. Do not force it past that point — overtightening cracks the ferrule.
- Replace the ferrule if tightening doesn’t stop it. Shut off the supply at the saddle valve, disconnect the fitting, slide the old ferrule off the tubing, and slide a new ferrule on ($5–10 for a 5-pack of 1/4-inch ferrules). Reconnect and hand-tighten plus a quarter turn.
- Test the inlet valve itself. If the leak is downstream of the fitting (at the body of the inlet valve), the valve is failed. Replace it — inlet valves run $25–75 by model number, and replacement is a 30–60 minute job (shut off supply, disconnect the line, swap the valve, reconnect).
- Confirm with a dry paper towel test: Dry the area, run the ice maker for one cycle (or fill a glass from the dispenser), then dry-touch every joint. A wet joint is the leak site.
Evaluate the Door Seals and Defrost Timer / Board
Only if Steps 1–6 don’t resolve the leak — and especially if water is appearing inside the fresh-food compartment rather than under the fridge.
- Test the door gasket. Close the door on a piece of paper (a dollar bill works). The paper should resist a moderate pull. If it slides out with no resistance, the gasket is failing at that point. Run the test along all four edges of both doors.
- Inspect for visual damage. A cracked, brittle, or wavy gasket is failing. Look at the corners and along the hinge side first — the most common failure points.
- Replace the gasket if failing. Order by model number — door gaskets for most brands run $50–200. Most replace with screws around the perimeter; some are peel-and-stick into a channel. Allow 30–60 minutes for the swap.
- Defrost timer / board diagnostic. If you’ve cleared the drain and the leak returns every defrost cycle (and the pan is fine), the defrost timer or main control board may be stuck in defrost. On a mechanical timer (older fridges), advance it manually with a screwdriver — the compressor should stop and the heater should activate. - Final environmental check. If all hardware checks pass and water still appears under the fridge, evaluate the installation location: high humidity basement or garage installations can’t evaporate drain water fast enough. Improve airflow at the back of the fridge or run a dehumidifier.
